When looking for cheap entertainment you can't go past museums, especially if you have a family. Most museums are free, though some of the larger ones charge a small admission fee. In some cases it is only for part of the exhibition, so you can miss that bit and go to the rest if your budget is strained. Any entry fees compare favourably to the cost of other holiday activity. The musty museums of yesteryear are long gone; replaced by many interactive exhibits - like Questacon in Canberra - and almost real scenes that hold great appeal to children; parents will also find them entertaining and informative.

Each capital city has major museums of several different types featuring such things as war or archaeological artefacts, wildlife of all kinds, the history of engines and many others things. Even smaller towns often have a museum that tells all about the history of the town and surrounding area. In Melbourne you can visit a rainforest, bellbirds and all; in Sydney there is the Powerhouse Museum an attraction all boys - and many girls - are sure to love, and many others. For a chance to see the kind of scientific exhibitions that would be impossible to do at school - e.g. radioactivity and cosmic radiation (Adelaide), the museum is the place to go.
